Choosing Safe Scissors for Kids and Classrooms

Scissors are one of the first tools children learn to use — great for developing motor skills, but only with the right, safe pair. Here’s how parents and teachers can choose scissors that are safe and easy for little hands.

Look for Blunt (Rounded) Tips

Safety scissors have rounded tips instead of sharp points, reducing the risk of pokes and scratches — essential for young children.

Right Size for Small Hands

  • Child-sized scissors with small handles are easier to control.
  • Handles that are too big cause a poor, unsafe grip.

Cutting Ability Still Matters

Safe doesn’t mean useless. Look for blades that actually cut paper cleanly — scissors that only chew frustrate children and put them off. Many kids’ scissors cut paper but not skin or clothes.

Consider Left-Handed Options

Left-handed children struggle with right-handed scissors. True left-handed scissors (not just recoloured) make cutting far easier and safer for them.

Spring-Assisted & Training Scissors

  • Spring-open scissors help toddlers and beginners who can’t yet re-open the blades.
  • Dual-handle “training” scissors let an adult guide alongside.

Classroom Tips

  • Store scissors tips-down in a holder, or in a closed box.
  • Teach “walk with scissors closed, tips in your fist”.
  • Supervise young children at all times.

A Note for Parents

Even safety scissors need supervision for the youngest crafters. Match the scissors to the child’s age and always keep an eye on early cutting practice.
